Occupying some 600 square meters of land 10 kilometers west of southern city of Almeria on the Costa del Sol, the Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Roquetas de Mar animal sanctuary is located in the desert outside the village of La Mojonera. The land was originally donated to the Sociedad by the La Mojonera local authority (Ayuntamiento) in 1995 and through the hard work of many volunteers, over the years an impressive, walled facility with all utilities now exists.
Volunteers
The sanctuary is manned by volunteers who not only look after the animals in the Sociedads' care, but also maintain and enhance the sanctuary infrastructure through a programme of continuous upgrading of the facilities.
Veterinary care
Some 100+ dogs are housed within the sanctuary at any one time. Cats are cared for in a separate facility in the nearby town of Roquetas de Mar. Veterinary services are provided both by local vets and visiting vets from abroad, many of whom donate their services free of charge.
Finding a home
The Sociedad has established an extensive network of adoption contacts throughout Germany, where many of our temporary "residents" find new homes. The close proximity of Almeria airport (with direct flights to most of Europe) enables the adopted animal to reach its new home outside Spain within a few hours. A number of European tourists visiting the Costa del Sol by car also leave Spain with a new member of the family!

As the sanctuary is only a 3 hour car trip along the Costa Tropical from Malaga in the west and a couple of hours from the Costa Blanca in the east, it is ideally situated for a days outing to adopt-a-dog. We are open most mornings from 10.00hrs. - 12.00hrs. or by appointment at most other times. Please telephone ahead to ensure a volunteer is available to meet you.
