ETA Member Released
On Wednesday the Portuguese Supreme Court freed a supposed ETA member, Luis Telletxea Maria, saying that there was insufficient evidence provided by the Spanish authorities in order to justify his extradition. This decision was a blow to the international struggle against ETA and the Spanish government was considering meeting with the Portuguese Ambassador in order to discuss what Mayor Oreja called a lamentable decision and a serious precedent in the struggle against terrorism.

Traffic on the Internet
The Spanish National Traffic Department launched a Spanish language information service on the Internet last Wednesday. News of roadworks, closures, diversions and general highways information is updated every 15 minutes. The World Wide Web address is: http://www.dgt.es

Parking Crackdown
The Senate has authorized that vehicles be towed away by the Traffic Department if they are incorrectly parked or parked in limited parking zones. It also approved tougher measures against those driving under the effects of drugs or alcohol and for anyone refusing to take a breath test.

Tragedy at Day-Nursery
Three babies were burned to death as they slept in an attic in a day-nursery in Vigo on Friday. The fire started at around 13.15 and there were 15 youngsters inside the building. The remaining 12 were rescued by two employees and some neighbours from the Alcabre district where the tragedy took place.

Car Bomb in Bilbao
A car bomb exploded at 22.30 on Friday in the Bilbao district of Uribarri. Noone was hurt but the explosion shook the walls of the nearby La Salve headquarters of the Guardia Civil (National Guard).

Reduction in Unemployment
Vice-President Alvaro Cascos predicts that unemployment in Spain will be reduced by 200.000 this year. The statement was made on the eve of the March 3rd victory of the Partido Popular in last year's general election.
